How to kick butt with your 2014 goals

Happy new year to you!

As you get into the swing of being back at work for 2014, it’s time to get cracking on thinking about what what goals you’re gonna kick in 2014.

They might be big goals, they might be smaller goals.

Here are my goals for the year:

  1. I’m going to eat my lunch away from my desk every day
  2. I’m going to practice saying ‘not right now’ instead of ‘yes’ or ‘no’
  3. I’m going to learn how to use pivot tables in Excel
  4. I’m going to complete a course at TAFE,

The size of your goal doesn’t matter. These are your goals and that’s what’s important.

Your goals don’t have to integrate into your annual goal-setting process at work (KPIs, performance review, whatever catch phrase they like to use in your company). But the goals that you do set in a formal process at work really should be SMART goals:

  • Specific – target a specific area for improvement
  • Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress
  • Assignable – specify who will do it
  • Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources
  • Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

(aside: there are variants to this (e.g. Attainable instead of Assignable), but you get the idea)

If you don’t go to the effort of creating SMART goals, please please please at least take some time to think about how you’re going to achieve your goals this year. It’s so important to set up strategies to make sure you succeed, in 2014 and beyond.

Here are my strategies for the goals I’ve set myself for 2014:

  1. I’m going to eat my lunch away from my desk every day
    I’m going to set a calendar reminder at 11.30am every day to remind me to time my tasks to allow for a break in the next couple of hours
  2. I’m going to practice saying ‘not right now’ instead of ‘yes’ or ‘no’
    I’m going to start practicing this with telephone clients before moving on to staff in the office
  3. I’m going to learn how to use pivot tables in Excel
    I’m going to check out YouTube for tutorials and talk to the training department to see if they have recommendations for formal training. To cement what I learn, I’m going to train other team members, too
  4. I’m going to complete a course at TAFE
    I’m going to sign up for an online course that I can do at my own pace and timetable regular sessions in my lunch breaks and at home so that I can complete all the readings and assignments.

Do you have some time between tasks today to think about a couple of goals for 2014? Scribble them down, type them into an email to yourself and stew on them. And check in on yourself every now and again, just to see how you’re going.

  1. Oooo nice ones! With the not right now thing I find that it’s important to let people know that you have plenty on your plate, but if they know when they want it by you may be able to fit it in. Most people just ask as soon as it comes to mind and for me, in real estate, the appointment may not be until the next day or that afternoon. Get a ‘by when’ they need it by and life will be a lot easier when it comes to prioritising.

    • i usually get “I HAVE A MEETING IN 20 MINUTES I NEED YOU DO AN HOUR’S WORTH OF WORK ON THIS REPOT BEFORE I GO IN”
      yeah.
      Most of the time though, requests start out as “are you busy?” and I always reply with “I’ve got plenty on, but tell me what you need”… it’s just that next part that I need to get better at

      • Oh yeah, you need to beat that out of them. A few, sorry I can’t fit that in now, a little more notice and it would’ve been cake {easy!}, will sort them out. Trust me, real estate agent’s are the worst. Charming and such, but the WORST. ;)
